Grand Forks at a Glance
Grand Forks, know as the land of sunshine and borscht, is located on the border
between Canada and the U.S.,
in BC's southern interior. This quiet
mountain town is situated around the convergence of the Kettle and Granby Rivers
that shape a fork that the town was named after. Besides these two rivers and
the great number of beaches they create, this town is also blessed with the rare
location in a valley that runs east to west, giving it an unusual amount of sunshine
in the summertime. The town's history is closely tied to the mining and railroad
boom of the 1890's, and is linked with the history of the Doukhobors,
a group of pacifist Russian immigrants who settled in the valley in 1909 and brought
with them a rich Russian soup called borscht. Due to the varied semi-arid climate,
Grand Forks is an attractive destination all year roundin the winter, great
snowfalls and a close proximity to major ski hills like Big
White, Red
Mountain, Baldy
and Phoenix
make for a great ski season, while wild mountain ranges and the friendly neighbouring
resort town of Christina
Lake provide an abundance of activities under the summer sun.
