A small yet vibrant community, the village of Balfour, British Columbia can be found nestled along the shores of the scenic Kootenay Lake, about 35 km (22 mi) northeast of Nelson. Balfour is the location for the western ferry terminal for the ferry route across the lake to Kotenay Bay. Provided by Kootenay Lake Ferry, the ferry is considered one of the longest free ferry rides in the world, taking approximately 35 minutes for the eight-km (five-mi) crossing. Balfour's main industry is tourism and is an ideal spot for camping vacations, fishing, boating, helicopter tours and more. Avid golfers won't want to miss playing a round at the Les Furber-designed Balfour Golf Course, which offers scenic views and challenging fairways, and outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy the area's trails and parks. Ross Lake Trail is a sub-alpine trail that offers hiking and fishing opportunities while Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park offers year-round activities such as boating and cross-country skiing.
